Phonics
Read Write Inc Phonics
At Hylton Castle Primary School, we teach phonics through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics scheme, which provides a structured, consistent, and engaging approach to early reading. This programme is delivered daily in Reception and Year 1, helping children to build strong foundations in decoding, blending, and word recognition. Pupils who do not pass the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check receive continued support through targeted daily phonics lessons in Year 2. This tailored support continues as needed throughout Key Stage 2, and from Year 5, children who still require phonics intervention move onto the Fresh Start programme, a specialised strand of RWI designed for older readers to boost reading accuracy, fluency, and confidence.
Children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their phonics knowledge to ensure they are always working at the right level. This means every child receives teaching that is closely matched to their stage of learning, helping them to make rapid progress. Groups are flexible and reviewed frequently so that children can move on as soon as they are ready. To support learning at home, we encourage parents to read regularly with their child, practise set sounds and words sent home, and use the resources provided to reinforce classroom learning. We believe that a strong home-school partnership is key to helping every child become a confident, independent reader.
